Summary

Running Back Rank: #63
Overall: #305

Hunter was the top backup for the 49ers his rookie season and even got a start because of injury. He did well in his role, finishing with 668 total yards. He was a nice compliment to Frank Gore and could be the starter for San Francisco in a few seasons. Hunter had double-digit carries three times and topped 50 total yards four times. Hunter might lack some size to be a starter, but has good quickness and does well in space. He also is a solid receiver as evident by his 16 receptions in limited action last season. Despite his size, though, Hunter runs with some power and physicality. He has good vision and does well hitting the hole in a hurry. He should battle for the top backup job with Brandon Jacobs this year.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
Hunter gets his weekly chances and has some total yardage potential in this offense. He could improve a little on last season but will need to hold off a host of other backs for playing time. If that happens, he can get 700 or 800 total yards and four touchdowns. He is a playmaker, so the 49ers will try to get him involved.

Notes

San Francisco 49ers RBs Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James may compete for playing time during training camp. Both could see time as the third-down running back.
Fantasy Impact: Hunter played well at times last year so don't count him out to win this job although James is a very talented back.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday, Feb. 23, that RB Kendall Hunter is likely to see a bigger role going forward. 'You saw a lot of Kendall Hunter last year. Don't think there would be any reason not to. He did a fabulous job for us in two phases - offensive and in the area of special teams,' Harbaugh said. 'And he just works so darn hard at it. And he likes football so much and he's willing to spend extra classroom time.'
Fantasy Impact: Hunter seems to have a bright future. He could be the starter in another year or two with Frank Gore nearing the end.

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter carried six times for 40 yards with a touchdown in Week 10 against the New York Giants. He also added a 4-yard reception. Hunter saw an increased workload in the second half with RB Frank Gore (knee) sidelined.
Fantasy Impact: Hunter has some upside if Gore misses some time. He is a talented back.

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (finger) suffered a dislocated finger in Week 9 but was considered probable to return.

Frank Gore is active for Week 4 but Hunter is expected to get the start at running back.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday, Sept. 26, that RB Kendall Hunter is ready for a bigger role in Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles, especially if RB Frank Gore (ankle) is unavailable. 'All of our guys, we have confidence in all our players to step up and fill the role that they are called on to do,' Harbaugh said. 'That's part of soldiering up and being a great teammate. Yeah, I think he is.'
Fantasy Impact: Hunter is worth a flier, especially if Gore is out. He has some upside and has looked better than Gore of late.

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter is currently the third running back on the depth chart but is competing with RB Anthony Dixon for the No. 2 running back job.
Fantasy Impact: Hunter has played well, though, and has a shot to unseat Dixon as the top backup at some point in the near future.

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter ripped off a 53-yard touchdown run in the preseason win Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Oakland Raiders. He finished with nine carries for 105 yards and a score.
Fantasy Impact: Hunter has a shot to be the top backup to Frank Gore this season. This performance certainly helped his chances.
