Mallett didn't attempt a pass his rookie season, serving as the No. 3 for the Patriots. He'll have a chance to compete for the top backup job but Brian Hoyer seems to have a fairly firm grip on the job for now. Mallett is likely the No. 3 for another season. Mallett is a talented player. He doesn't move around well at all, but has a great arm and is accurate. He has a pro body and the makeup to succeed in this league. He has character concerns (maturity issues), but playing in the Patriots' system should help him in this area.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Mallett isn't a guy to draft just yet. He might be the future at the position for the Patriots but that won't be until Tom Brady retires, which is likely several years away.

New England Patriots rookie QB Ryan Mallett will be able to sit buried on the depth chart and be afforded time to learn the system. QB Tom Brady is firmly entrenched as the starter, and Brian Hoyer has shown promise as his backup. The Patriots also have Jonathan Crompton, who was a fifth-round selection in 2010, on the roster. Hoyer is entering the final year of his contract, so if he plays well during the preseason the Patriots could look to shop him to another team if there is interest around the NFL.

Fantasy Impact: Mallett isn't likely seeing the field any time soon.
