Blount shined at times last season but was more of a disappointment most weeks. Blount did have three 100-yard games but also had seven games with fewer than 50-rushing yards. He didn't follow up his 1,000-yard rookie season as expected, making many wonder if he can start in this league. His inconsistency last season likely cost him the starting job. The Bucs drafted Doug Martin in the first round of this year's draft. He likely bumps Blount from the starting spot in Tampa. This could be a make or break year for Blount even with Martin around. He'll still get his carries. Blounty is plenty young enough to get it going. Remember, Blount had a 1,000-yard rookie season despite starting for about half a season. Blount is a big back but has surprising speed and moves for a big man. His game is power, though. Blount will run over, through and around would-be tacklers. He isn't much of a factor in the passing game, having just 20 receptions in two seasons.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Blount was on his way to stardom but hit a speed bump last season. Don't give up on him yet but he isn't a surefire fantasy back for this coming season, especially with Martin around. Take him as a No. 3 or 4 fantasy back. He still could get the goal-line work and the Bucs' offense should be better, which are two positives for Blount. But he won't play on passing downs and probably won't be the No. 1 back from day one. He could get 600 or 700 total yards and eight touchdowns in this offense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie RB Doug Martin, one of the team's first-round selections, is likely to be the team's feature running back in his first season. Martin is an all-around back with two 1,000-yard seasons under his belt. He also caught 28 passes each of the past two seasons. Running backs are rarely taken in the first round to ride the pine, so Martin is likely to immediately leap past RB LeGarrette Blount on the team's depth chart. Bucs head coach Greg Schiano has sent out hints that the team wants to run the ball and has implied Blount's pass protection and fumbles could be liabilities for the team. Tampa Bay gave up second- and fourth-round selections to trade back into the first round to acquire Martin at 31st overall.

Fantasy Impact: Blount's value takes a big hit. In the end, his one-dimensional skills hurt his chances to start.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano has told RB LeGarrette Blount that he must do a better job of protecting the ball, or he will not play. 'I think LeGarrette has tons of ability,' Schiano said. 'No one who touches the football will get touches if they don't protect the football. That is one of our core covenants - the ball. It's so important they named the game after it. We make a big deal about it.' Blount rushed for 781 yards and five touchdowns last season but fumbled five times and lost three of them.

Due to new league rules, the Buccaneers cannot begin their workout program until April 2. As a result, Blount will have less than a month to show the team's new coaching staff that he is capable of being trusted as a blocker and a receiver, allowing him to earn regular snaps on third down. In his first two seasons, Blount was not able to do enough to earn that role. There is speculation the Buccaneers could use their fifth pick on RB Trent Richardson (Alabama).
