Hoyer attempted just a pass in three games as the Patriots top backup last season. He has attempted 43 passes in three seasons with the Patriots. New England seems pretty content with Hoyer as their top backup, though, although he could be challenged by second-year quarterback Ryan Mallet this season. Hoyer has pretty good size and a decent arm. He was a good leader in college and seems to have carried that over to the NFL, following in the footsteps of Tom Brady. Hoyer is young and still has plenty to learn (i.e. reading defenses), but has a great guy to learn from in Brady.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Hoyer is decent insurance for Tom Brady owners, but probably isn't worth a roster spot just yet. Brady rarely misses a game and the Patriots leave their starters in longer than most teams, limiting Hoyer's playing time even more. And we wouldn't count out Mallet winning the top backup job from Hoyer this season.
