Mendenhall failed to top the 1,000-yard mark for the third straight season. He wasn't quite as consistent as previous seasons as the Steelers had all sorts of issues running the ball much of the year. He had a couple 100-yard games but also had fewer than 50-rushing yards six games. Mendenhall did score nine touchdowns, giving him 22 touchdowns the last two seasons. He has been finding the end zone on a pretty regular basis in a good Steelers' offense. In the last three seasons, Mendenhall averages 1,103-rushing yards, 194-receiving yards and 10 touchdowns per season. The Steelers are looking for more balance in the offense this season, which could mean more consistent work for Mendenhall. He is a pretty complete back. Mendenhall is a very good between the tackles runner but has the speed to break some big plays. He also is a decent receiving option as evident by his 66 catches the last three seasons.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Mendenhall remains outside the top group of running backs. He is a good bounce-back candidate for the coming year, though. It wouldn't surprise to see him have a career season with Todd Haley now calling plays. Haley has produced some big fantasy seasons for running backs (i.e. Jamaal Charles). A season with 1,600 or so total yards and double-digit touchdowns seems about right for Mendenhall in 2012.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to add another running back to the roster this offseason with the uncertainty surrounding RB Rashard Mendenhall (knee). 'I am sure we are going to get another running back, whether it's in free agency or in the draft,' head coach Mike Tomlin said. 'We will address it.'

The Pittsburgh Steelers expect RB Rashard Mendenhall (knee) to play in 2012. However, what they don't know is when or in what capacity. Mendenhall tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the team's 2011 regular-season finale, and general manager Kevin Colbert said later that Mendenhall would probably need a year to fully recover. 'To clarify, what I said was I never think players coming off an ACL are 100 percent for a full year. It doesn't mean they can't play,' Colbert said. 'At some point, we'll have Rashard back. I'm confident of that.'

Fantasy Impact: He is going to be a player to watch in training camp. We'll know more on his status at that time.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not counting on RB Rashard Mendenhall (knee) to play in 2012; however, general manager Kevin Colbert didn't rule out a return by the running back sometime next season. 'I never feel good about an ACL for a year,' Colbert said. Colbert didn't describe running back as a pressing need heading into free agency.

Fantasy Impact: This isn't a surprise with Mendenhall getting injured so late in the season. He is no sure thing for 2012.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hopeful RB Rashard Mendenhall (knee) will be ready for training camp next August after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the Week 17 game against the Cleveland Browns. He is expected to have surgery in another week or two once the swelling in his right knee subsides.

Fantasy Impact: Nothing is certain getting hurt this late in the season but he has a chance to be ready for 2012.
