SUMMARY
Quarterback Rank: #87
Overall: #528

After starting some of the season and playing alright in 2010, Smith couldn't find work last season. He sat out all of last year but did sign with the Steelers shortly after the season was over. He'll get a chance to be the top backup for the Steelers. Smith is a good athlete. He doesn't have a huge arm, but can make plays on the move and push the ball downfield. Smith needs to work on his accuracy (completes just 52 percent of his passes for his career) and decision making. At age 28, Smith still has some time to get going but looks more like a backup than starter for NFL teams.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
Smith still remains far from polished and sitting out last season isn't going to help. He has a legit shot to be the top backup for the Steelers but that doesn't give him much fantasy value. He was a stretch even when starting for the 49ers a few years back so don't bother with him come draft day.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed free-agent QB Troy Smith (49ers). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Fantasy Impact: He could be the top backup in Pittsburgh if all goes well.

The Miami Dolphins worked out free-agent QB Troy Smith (49ers) but decided not to sign him.
Fantasy Impact: Smith is running out of options a bit. He might need an injury to occur to find work.

The San Francisco 49ers are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent QB Troy Smith this offseason, reports Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com.
Fantasy Impact: Smith made plays at times during his starts, but the 49ers seem to want to go an entirely different direction at quarterback in 2011.

The San Francisco 49ers apparently do not see re-signing impending free-agent QB Troy Smith as a high priority this offseason, reports Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com.
Fantasy Impact: Smith played alright for the 49ers, so it is a bit of a surprise to see them just let him go without much of a fight.

San Francisco 49ers QB Troy Smith will be the team's starting quarterback in Week 16, a source told Jason La Canfora, of NFL Network.
Fantasy Impact: This disputes some early reports from the week, but it isn't a surprise. Smith torched the Rams his first meeting with him. Either way, we would expect Smith to be on a short leash.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said QB Troy Smith will start in the team's Week 12 game, reports CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco.
Fantasy Impact: Smith gets one more crack at it, but should be on a short leash.

Smith had his struggles his third start of the season Week 11. He finished with just 148-passing yards and was intercepted. He failed to lead the 49ers to a touchdown. His hold on the starter's job could be tenuous.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary will not commit to QB Troy Smith as his starting quarterback for Week 12, according to David White, of the San Francisco Chrionicle.
Fantasy Impact: Who knows what the 49ers will do next week?

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said QB Troy Smith will start the team's Week 11 game, according to CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco.
Fantasy Impact: He deserves to start with the way he has played the last two games.

Smith had a great showing Week 10 in his second start of the season. Smith led the 49ers to victory, throwing for 356 yards and a touchdown without an interception. The 49ers offense continues to make a lot of plays with Smith at the helm. Expect Smith to continue to start for San Francisco.
